After reviewing the GT-3 Mark II, a radio in which many problems were solved, the poor, sometimes meaningless squelch levels on various Baofeng models were one of the few things left on my ‘The Perfect Baofeng’ wish list.
Squelch levels improved somewhat over time, but it just wasn’t enough. The slightest whisper of a modem, router or switch still opens up the squelch, whatever the setting. It seems that this annoyance will become something of the past. No, not thanks to Baofeng, but thanks to the efforts of the Chirp development team.
Programming Cable for Baofeng UV-5R Radio With Arduino: One may have a 2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo audio cable laying around. This, a couple of jumper wires and a spare Arduino Uno are sufficient to make programming cable for a Baofeng UV-5RV2+ radio! Could work with other radios too!"Programming".
A new ‘daily build’, available within a few days, will let you decide when the squelch opens up – either when receiving a tiny noisy signal, or when a repeater around the corner starts transmitting. The image below (courtesy Miklor.com) shows how the the new ‘Service Settings’ option will look like in Chirp:
As you can see you can set a personal threshold for every individual squelch level (1-9), and enter different settings for VHF and UHF. The higher the number, the more signal you need to open up the squelch.
I’ll keep you posted regarding the compatibility with old and new models.
Baofeng 888s programming problems. I recently bought six Baofeng 888s radios to play about with in various Allstar nodes that I plan to build. Plus it is always best to keep a few in stock. There is quite a wide choice of radios for Allstar nodes, but the 888s is cheap and cheerful. I do find them reliable though, and the audio quality in the node at least is fine. But of course, as you will know they come already programmed to a number of unsuitable frequencies. So your first task is to program them to the UHF amateur frequency that you plan to use for your Allstar node. Also, it is vitally important to get rid of the voice prompts at this stage as well. Fail to do this and your node will be forever transmitting to the world what a Lid you are!
Baofeng Programming Cable Not Working Windows 10
What to do if the radio is damaged – Broke your Baofeng? Here’s what to do. What to do if the programming cable does not detect the radio – Can’t access your radio from your computer? What to do if the programming cable does not work – Can’t get your programming cable to work? Here is how to get it going. For easier initial frequency programming, copy and paste, and importing frequency files from previous radios – you may want to consider using the CHIRP Programming Software found above. Download Links: BaoFeng UV-82C VIP Programming Software. BaoFeng UV-82HP VIP Programming Software. BaoFeng BF-F8HP VIP Programming Software. If you purchased the Baofeng UV Series USB Programming Cable from Buy Two Way Radios, the driver for Windows will be on the CD included with the cable in the USB Cable Driver folder. Insert the CD and go to USB Cable Driver USB Cable Driver Prolific 3.2.0.0.exe. This is the correct driver.
Baofeng Programming Cable Problems
So off I went happy in my hobby. I attached my programming cable and loaded the latest version of Chirp, no joy. Chirp seemed to download from the radio OK, but would not upload, persistence rewarded me with bricking two units.
I then changed the computer and the programming cable. Then downloaded the latest factory software for the 888s from Baofeng. The result, another two bricked radios!
The Solution.
But how did I resolve my Baofeng 888s programming problems? Well finally, I went to www.409shop.com, went to their software section. Then found the Baofeng 888s listing and downloaded their BF-480 version of the programming software. Result? It worked like a dream with my two remaining sets.
Baofeng Programming Cable Problems And Solutions
My experience is that at some future point Chirp will update to accommodate the latest version of the 888s. But until then take care!
Baofeng Programming Cable Problems
I suppose I could get on to Crowdfunding to replace the bricked sets! 🙂
